Information and Essay Guidelines

Deadline:             March 31, 2019

Available to:       High school seniors and existing college students currently relying on Bank of Botetourt to provide their banking services.

  • Maintains a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Maintains an active checking account
  • Award Amount:  $500.00

Essay Topic: “How has Bank of Botetourt been able to take care of your banking and financial needs?” 

Essay should be limited to 2 pages, 1.5 spacing at 12-point font, and margins at 1-inch.
Include a title page (separate page within the Word document containing your essay, not a separate document) with the following information:

  • Name
  • E-mail address
  • Phone number
  • School’s name
  • Date submitted
  • Brief statement about your college plans
  • Title of essay
  1. Please do not include your name or any personal information on any page other than the title page.
  2. Please include proof of enrollment in your school and GPA verification. A letter from your guidance counselor stating your GPA is sufficient as opposed to a full transcript is acceptable.
  3. Bank of Botetourt employees and their immediate family members are not eligible for the scholarship.

Virginia Bankers Association Bank Day Scholarship Program

Have you always wondered what actually goes on inside a bank? Do you need $7,500 to help pay for your college tuition? If so, consider participating in Bank Day.               

On this day, you will spend a day in a bank shadowing a banker in their daily duties. After the day, you will write an essay based on your experience. These essays will be judged by bankers and thirteen scholarships (twelve regional and one statewide) will be awarded to the winners.                       

Bank Day will take place on Tuesday, March 19, 2019. 

Scholarship Amounts:

  • $1,000 Each for six honorable mention scholarships
  • $2,500 Each for six regional winners
  • $5,000Statewide winner ($7,500 total since all candidates will also be regional winners)

Participation Criteria:

  • Currently enrolled as a high school senior in a Virginia high school
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Resident of Virginia
  • Teacher/guidance counselor contact information provided by student

Deadlines & Important Dates:

March 12, 2019:    Deadline to sign-up for the program.

March 19, 2019:    Bank Day! Shadowing takes place.

April 12, 2019:       Student essays due by 5 p.m. Essays submitted directly to VBA via email.

May 3, 2019:          Regional and honorable mention winners notified. Regional winners will be entered into the statewide contest for an additional $5,000 scholarship.

May 10, 2019:        State winner notified.
